Collecting Art Because You Like It Is Still Allowed

There is a strange rumor floating around that buying art has to be complicated. It does not. You are still allowed to look at a piece, like it, imagine it on your wall, and buy it without forming a committee.

A good collection starts with attention, not intimidation. Maybe you like the colors. Maybe the subject reminds you of somewhere you have been. Maybe the painting makes you laugh in a way you did not expect. These are all legitimate reasons, even if they do not sound fancy enough for a catalog essay.

John Baker's collection gives buyers a few different doors in. Floral prints if the room needs color. Coastal work if the room needs air. Religious humor if the room has gotten too well-behaved. Photographs if you want Venice, Florida energy without sand in the carpet.

The real trick is simple: choose something you want to keep seeing. That is the whole advanced course.
